Books

The Notebook By Nicholas Sparks
Bestselling book which recounts the courtship of a young couple, juxtaposed with the knowledge that the wife now has advanced Alzheimer's. Reminds us all that everyone who is old and frail today was once younger, even our age! Tuesdays With Morrie By Mitch Albom Another bestseller, about the relationship of man dying from Lou Gehrig's disease, and his former student who comes to visit each week.

In The Shadow of Memory By Floyd Skloot
This first-person, nonfiction book describes what it's like to suffer from an accident-caused cognitive impairment. As the author wrote, "nor gradually... I was geezered." A great resource to understand cognitive impairment on a very personal level.

Click here to hear a first-person account by NPR reporter Robin Young about taking care of her Mom.
Excerpt: "Some of you know I've been caring for my Mom long distance for a while now, navigating a bewildering maze of dementia and healthcare coverage. There was a group of us actually, home aids and geriatric care doctors, my brothers and sisters, Moms grandkids and a saintly boyfriend. Together we were the Flying Wallendas of elder care, keeping Mom aloft. Now I feel as if I missed a catch and my arms are so empty."

Movies

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
In this movie, released in Summer 2005, Johnny Depp plays Willie Wonka, owner of the largest candy factory in the world (remember Gene Wilder starred in the movie way back when?). Charlie is the young boy who wins a tour of the chocolate factory. He lives with his Mom, Dad, and both sets of grandparents. We see the grandparents spend their time in two double beds which face each other, smack dab in the middle of the pathetic house where the poor family lives. What a new senior housing option!
